What ChatGPT features should I learn after the basics?
Good next steps are Custom Instructions or Skills for repeat tasks, the official Excel and PowerPoint add-ins, built-in data analysis for spreadsheets, Deep Research for cited reports, Projects for team handoffs, and a review of your Data Controls before connecting sensitive apps. Many advanced features depend on your plan.
This is a reference guide to ChatGPT topics beyond the basics — what each one does, how to get started, and a ready-to-use prompt for each. Come back to it whenever you're ready to try something new.
Skills & Customization
What are ChatGPT Custom Skills?
A Skill packages a task you repeat often into reusable instructions ChatGPT applies automatically. ChatGPT Skills launched in mid-2026 and are currently available on Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu plans — not yet a default feature on Free, Plus, or Pro.
- Eligible plan: find Skills under the sidebar → Plugins → Skills tab, and create one via chat, an editor, upload, or by recording a workflow.
- Free, Plus, or Pro: use Custom Instructions plus a saved prompt as a workaround.
Help me create a Skill called "[Skill Name]." It should be used whenever I ask you to [describe the trigger, e.g., review a vendor contract]. Ask me what you need to know to write clear instructions — the input format, the output format, and any rules to follow — then write the final version for me to save.
How do I build a team Skill library?
On eligible workspace plans, Skills are shareable — one person builds a Skill and the whole workspace can use it once an admin turns Skills on.
- Confirm your plan is Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, or Edu.
- An admin enables Skills under workspace Permissions & Roles.
- Build and test a Skill; it's then available workspace-wide from the Skills tab.
Help me write this Skill's instructions clearly enough that anyone on our team could use it without me explaining it in person — include what it does, when it triggers, and one test example.
How do I write better prompts?
- Be specific about format, length, and audience.
- Give an example of the output you want when you can.
- Ask ChatGPT to ask clarifying questions before anything complex.
Here's a prompt I've been using: [paste your prompt]. Rewrite it to be clearer and more specific, and tell me what context was missing that made your first guess less accurate.
Office & Productivity Tools
How do I use ChatGPT in Excel?
An official add-in, generally available across all plans including Free. Install "ChatGPT for Excel" from Microsoft Marketplace, open it from the Office Add-in sidebar, and sign in.
Explain what's driving the total in cell [X], and flag any formulas in this sheet that look inconsistent with the rest of the model.
How do I use ChatGPT in PowerPoint?
Also an official add-in, generally available across plans. Install "ChatGPT for PowerPoint" from Microsoft Marketplace. Give it the content first — it drafts faster from material than from a blank prompt.
Turn this outline into a 10-slide presentation: a title slide, one slide per key point below, and a closing summary slide.
[paste your outline or notes]
How do I use ChatGPT with Word?
The official ChatGPT pane for Word is currently a Business/Enterprise feature deployed by IT (the "ChatGPT app for Office" from AppSource). On any plan, you can draft in a normal chat and paste into Word.
Draft this as a two-page proposal with section headers, a pricing table, and a signature block at the end, formatted so it pastes cleanly into Word. [paste your content or notes]
What is ChatGPT in Chrome?
OpenAI retired its standalone Atlas browser on August 9, 2026, folding its page-reading and in-page features into the official ChatGPT Chrome extension. It's rolling out gradually, so check it's available to you first. Install the OpenAI-published listing from the Chrome Web Store; treat agent-style actions like filling forms as emerging rather than guaranteed.
Summarize what's on this page and pull out anything that looks like a deadline, a price, or a required next step.
Content & Communication
How do I scale content with myvoice.md?
Upload myvoice.md to the Project you use for content, and add a custom instruction requiring a draft-and-review step before publishing.
Using myvoice.md, draft 3 social captions and a short blog intro about [topic]. Flag anything you're unsure fits our brand voice so I can double-check it before it goes anywhere.
How do I turn meeting transcripts into action items?
Paste or upload the transcript into a chat — no special connector required. Connect Google Calendar if you want meeting context pulled in.
Here's the transcript from today's call with [client/team]. Summarize it into action items with owners and due dates, then draft a short follow-up email.
How do I create customer communication templates?
Build it as a Skill if your plan supports it, or keep it as a saved prompt.
Using our tone from myvoice.md, draft a response to this customer complaint: [paste the complaint]. Acknowledge the issue clearly, explain next steps, and don't over-apologize.
Data & Reporting
How do I analyze a spreadsheet with ChatGPT?
Upload your CSV or spreadsheet directly into a chat — built-in data analysis works out of the box.
Clean this data, remove duplicates, and show me the top 10 rows by revenue with a simple chart.
How do I set up a weekly financial snapshot?
Connect Google Drive/Sheets (Settings → Apps) and build a scheduled task the same way as the daily digest.
Set up a weekly scheduled task that reads my [Sheet name] and reports cash on hand, expenses versus last week, and any invoices more than 30 days overdue.
How do I track competitors?
Click the + (or Tools) in the chat box and select Deep Research — available on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise (not Free), with a monthly limit that varies by plan.
Research [competitor]'s current pricing and any announcements from the last 30 days. Compare it to ours and flag anything we should respond to.
Team & Collaboration
What can the ChatGPT app in Slack do?
It lets your team chat with ChatGPT and search Slack from inside Slack. It responds when someone asks rather than monitoring channels, and channel message-posting isn't a standard action — confirmed write actions (Enterprise-only, admin-enabled) are joining a channel, creating a reminder, uploading a file, or updating a profile. A Slack admin installs it from the Slack Marketplace; individually, connect Slack under Settings → Apps.
Summarize this Slack thread and turn it into a checklist of next steps with owners.
What are Shared Projects?
A team-wide knowledge base with role-based access on Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. An admin enables it in workspace settings; then create a Project and invite teammates.
Write a short set of Project instructions for our team that explains what this Project is for, what tone to use, and what teammates should upload here versus keep elsewhere.
How do I hand off work between team members?
Keep all related chats inside the same Project rather than scattered across separate ones.
Summarize everything in this Project so far so a teammate could pick this up without re-reading every chat — what's been decided, what's outstanding, and what to do next.
Research & Deeper Work
What is Deep Research?
A multi-step research mode that searches, reads, and writes up a cited report — available on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise (not Free), with usage limits by plan. Select it from the + or Tools icon, give it a well-scoped question, and review its research plan before it runs.
Research the top 5 vendors for [category]. Compare pricing, reviews, and contract terms, and recommend one with your reasoning.
How do I use ChatGPT for recruiting and hiring?
No special setup — quality depends on how clear your criteria are.
Write a job post for [role], plus 8 structured interview questions with a scoring rubric, based on these must-have qualifications: [list].
Advanced & Technical
What is Codex CLI?
OpenAI's terminal-based coding agent for technical staff. Install with the native installer (curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh on Mac/Linux) or via npm (npm install -g @openai/codex, requires Node.js). Run codex in a project folder and sign in with your ChatGPT or API account. A good first ask: "Explain what this codebase does."
What security and permission settings should I review?
ChatGPT's controls live under Data Controls.
- Business/Enterprise/Edu admins manage which connected apps and actions are enabled under Workspace settings → Apps → Manage actions.
- Check Settings → Data Controls → "Improve the model for everyone." On Free/Plus/Pro this is on by default and controls whether your chats train OpenAI's models; Business/Enterprise/Edu don't use your data for training by default.
This is a settings review, not a prompt — worth 15 minutes with whoever owns your ChatGPT workspace before connecting anything sensitive.
